Manchester United have announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach.

Amorim will officially start at Old Trafford on Monday 11 November, with interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge until then.

The 39-year-old Portuguese arrives from Sporting, replacing Erik ten Hag, who left Man Utd on Monday after two-and-a-half years in charge.

Amorim has agreed a deal until June 2027, with Man Utd having the option of an additional year. The club say the move is subject to work visa requirements.

Amorim becomes the sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement 11 years ago.

His Sporting team are top of Primeira Liga having won all nine matches this season, scoring 30 goals and conceding only two.

Man Utd currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League, seven points off fourth spot and only seven points above the relegation zone.

His first match will be against Ipswich Town on Sunday 24 November.

Amorim’s path to Man Utd

After a playing career as a central midfielder, capped 14 times by Portugal, Amorim's coaching career started at Braga when he was placed in charge of their reserves.

Within four months he had earned promotion to head coach of the first team.

He then won the Portuguese League Cup, which convinced Sporting to shell out a reported €10million to bring him to Estadio Jose Alvalade.

During his four-year tenure at Sporting, Amorim's stock has risen considerably after breaking the domestic dominance of Benfica and Porto.

He ended the club’s 19-year title wait with a Primeira Liga triumph in 2021 and won back-to-back League Cups. Amorim took Sporting to a second championship last season, their 20th title, finishing 10 points in front of Benfica.
